Frequently Asked Questions
What is kefir? Is it the same as yogurt?
Kefir is a fermented dairy drink similar to yogurt, but lighter, smoother, and naturally probiotic. It’s thinner than spoonable yogurt and has a gentle tang with a clean, refreshing finish.
What does the kefir taste like?
Our kefir is:
- Silky and smooth
- Mildly acidic
- Lightly refreshing
- With subtle natural milk aroma
- A hint of natural micro-fizz (from fermentation)
How many batches can I make with one kit?
Each kit includes:
- 4 Starter Packets
- 4 RFID Cards
That means up to 4 separate brews, depending on how much milk you use each time. Each RFID card starts a fermentation program.
Whether you make 1 liter or a full container, one card = one brew.
This keeps the process simple and avoids reusing old cards.
How much milk do I need per batch?
Use 1 packet per liter (0.26 gal) of milk.
You can make 1L, 2L, or more — as long as your container fits inside the iGulu machine.
Can I use UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) milk?
Yes!
If you're using UHT milk, you can skip the heating step.
Just pour, mix, and ferment — only two steps.
How long does fermentation take?
About 2 days inside the iGulu machine:
- Day 1: 26°C
- Day 2: 12°C
After fermentation, chill in the fridge for best texture and flavor.
What kind of container should I use?
Use a clean, sealable, food-grade container that fits inside the iGulu machine.
It must not be too large or too tall.
(Any standard yogurt / juice / mason-style container generally fits.)
Do I need to boil the milk?
- Fresh milk: Heat to 82°C (180°F) and let cool to 23–25°C.
- UHT milk: No heating required.
Heating improves texture and stability if using fresh milk.
How long can kefir be stored?
Store in the refrigerator for 3–5 days.
Because it’s a live product, the flavor may continue to develop slightly over time.
Can kids drink kefir?
Generally, yes — kefir is widely enjoyed by kids for its mild tang and smooth texture. If your child has a milk allergy or sensitivity, consult a doctor.
Can I flavor my kefir?
Absolutely! Add fruit purée, honey, jam, granola, vanilla, or anything you enjoy — after fermentation.
Does this starter contain lactose?
The milk you use will contain lactose, but fermentation naturally reduces lactose levels, making kefir easier to digest for many people.
