Some beers carry memory. Some beers carry craft. And some beers carry both.
When a longtime iGulu user with past experience living in the UK and visiting breweries across Britain and Europe brewed our English IPA kit, he didn't write a quick "tastes great" review. He kept a brewing diary. Day by day. Pint by pint.
A Brewer Who Knows His Beer
Before diving into the brew review itself, it helps to understand who's doing the reviewing. This community member lived in England for a year in the late 1980s, where he developed a deep appreciation for British draft beer. He later spent years in the packaging machinery industry, working directly inside breweries across England, Scotland, Ireland, and Scandinavia. Now, he brings a rare combination of sensory memory and real-world production context to every pint he pours.
First Impression: The Kit Format That Makes Mixing… Easy
The first surprise wasn't the flavor. It was the prep.
This English IPA kit comes with wort, malt extract, and hops already combined in liquid form. There's one small extra step—gently warming it for a few minutes—and then everything comes together quickly:
- A smooth, homogeneous mix in minutes
- Easy to stir evenly
- Less guesswork during prep
His takeaway was simple: he'd happily choose this format again because it made the setup feel straightforward and consistent—no second-guessing.
Day-by-Day Tasting Notes: An English IPA That Earns Its Keep
Results can vary with temperature, CO₂ pressure, and conditioning time.
What follows is a brewer's honest day-by-day tasting journal—shared to help other iGulu users know what to expect.
The first pour came with significant foam and a head that was more generous than ideal. But even at this early stage, the appearance was appropriate for an English-style beer, and the taste, while initially sweet, revealed a pleasing character as the pint settled. The sub-60 IBU hop profile felt balanced — distinctly an IPA without being overwhelming.
The foam remained pronounced, piling toward the center of the keg. He poured, let it settle, topped up twice, and even employed a traditional technique he remembered from pubs in England and Ireland: scraping the foam from the top with a knife to achieve a proper head. A second day of conditioning had already made a noticeable improvement in flavor balance.
Our brewer has a simple philosophy: a great beer should taste just as good at the bottom of the second pint as it did at the top of the first. Over two consecutive days, this English IPA passed that test. Both pints, on both days, held steady from first sip to last.
By the last pour, the beer had reached its peak. CO₂ conditioning had improved carbonation and preserved freshness throughout. The process of pressurizing to +/-15 psi during conditioning and then reducing to 3–4 psi an hour before serving minimized foam and delivered a clean, satisfying final glass.
The Role of Community and Support in Building Confidence
One theme runs through this brewer's entire iGulu journey: he didn't do it alone, and he didn't have to.
When he struggled during initial setup, iGulu support proved to be a turning point. That consistent, responsive support gave him the confidence to go all in: to build a small iGulu setup across locations, commit to brewing all his own beer, and share it with the people around him.
For New iGulu Brewers
It's easy to dismiss a positive review. But when it comes from someone who has stood on the floor of commercial breweries, who has drunk his way through British pub culture, and who came into the iGulu ecosystem with genuine skepticism — that perspective carries real weight.
His goal now? To brew every beer he drinks, and to share it with everyone who will have a glass. That's the kind of trust we're proud to earn.
