100 iGulu User Stories | David Armstrong Made S1 Part of His Everyday Life

We’re collecting 100 real user stories from the iGulu community, stories about how brewing fits into different routines, hobbies, and moments of everyday life. Today, we’re introducing David Armstrong.

For David Armstrong, a craft beer fan, BBQ enthusiast, and host of the pop-culture podcast 'Seen on Screen', the S1 was more than just a brewing machine. It became part of a lifestyle built around BBQ, hosting, and making things from scratch.

David Armstrong had tried homebrewing before, but with a more basic setup. He liked the idea of it, but the experience was harder to manage than he wanted.

As he put it, it often felt like a lot of work for something that was just ok.”

Without reliable temperature control, brewing depended too much on the environment. It took effort, attention, and patience, but the results were not always worth repeating. After a while, he stopped.

What made the S1 different was how naturally it fit into the life he already loved.

As a longtime craft beer fan, David already appreciated good beer and loved discovering local breweries when he traveled. At the same time, BBQ and hosting had become a big part of his lifestyle. He spends much of the summer around the smoker, making everything from brisket and ribs to rolls and mac & cheese from scratch.

For him, the S1 was not just a new gadget for the kitchen or bar. It was the missing piece.

In his words, “The only thing that was missing was my own homebrewed beers.”

That is what first made the S1 stand out on Kickstarter. It felt easier, more practical, and far more compatible with real life than the brewing setups he had used before.

What impressed him most was the balance between simplicity and flexibility. The S1 made it easier for beginners to start brewing at home, while still giving more experienced users room to experiment with custom recipes. Its all-in-one design was another big advantage, compact enough to fit naturally into the home, and sleek enough to leave on display.

Now that he has been using it, what David enjoys most is the ease of use.

From starting a brew to dispensing the final drink, everything works the way he hoped it would. And after the wait, the payoff feels even better:

“Nothing beats pouring that first pint after waiting the 10+ days for a brew to finish.”

That first pour is not just about the beer itself. It is about the feeling of turning time, patience, and anticipation into something you can finally enjoy.

The S1 has also become part of the way David hosts and shares. Having fresh beer on tap at home gives friends something new to discover when they stop by, and the response is often immediate:

“You made this?!”

That mix of surprise, pride, and sharing is part of what makes the experience so rewarding. It is not only about brewing for yourself, but about creating something worth serving to other people.

David is also used to sharing his interests online. As the host of Seen on Screen, and through his own hobby-focused content, he enjoys talking about the things he loves, from BBQ and board games to brewing at home. That made the S1 a natural fit not only for his lifestyle, but for the kind of content he likes to share as well.

He noticed something many people in the community have probably felt too: there still is not a lot of content out there about the S1 or the brew kits. So instead of waiting for more people to talk about it, he decided to help show what it can actually look like in real life.

That makes David’s story about more than just brewing. It is about how the S1 fits into the rhythm of real hobbies, real hosting, and real everyday enjoyment.

And while it fits perfectly into summer BBQ season, he does not see it as something only for warm weather.

His favorite line says it best:

“BBQ season is short, but homebrew season is year round.”

Whether it is the perfect pairing for a summer cookout, a full-bodied beer for a slow evening, or something festive to share with friends during the holidays, the S1 has found a place in his routine far beyond a single occasion.
